Subject: Support West Maui affordable housing
Aloha Maui County Council,
I urge Maui County Council to prioritize funding for long-term housing initiatives in West Maui, particularly for the Kaiāulu o Kupuohi and Pulelehua projects. These initiatives hold the key to providing stable housing for our families and individuals affected by the Lahaina fire, and their expedited construction is important.
The devastating impact of the fire has left thousands of West Maui residents in precarious living situations, with many still residing in hotel rooms or unstable accommodations even after almost nine months since the fire. The closure of breakfast and lunch programs in these hotel settings further highlights the challenges faced by our community. Additionally, more than a quarter of displaced individuals have been forced to leave the island due to the huge shortage of housing options.
Given that 87% of displaced residents are renters, the need for affordable housing on West Maui is critically urgent. Since the fire, no funding has been allocated for long-term housing projects in West Maui, exacerbating the housing crisis for affected families and individuals. Please prioritize building stable long-term dignified housing in West Maui.
Mahalo,
Kahu Noelani Jai

Subject: Affordable housing
Aloha,
Maui County is in desperate need for affordable housing.
What is affordable? Under 200k homes or less.
I was fortunate and blessed to have bought and build my home back in 2001 through a self help project, that was back 23 years ago.
Even back then it was difficult for local families, to afford that and get into the project.
My daughter has 2 children and her boyfriend qualified for an “ affordable”. House in Haliimaile at mid $700k! Their monthy mortgage payments will be close to $400k a month!
On Facebook we see rentals for $13k and $20k a month! Why?
Because investors are flocking to Hawaii and buying up our real estate, or developing our real estate for huge profits!
It’s all about the money! The mighty dollar! But what about the people?
We need to take care of our residents first!!! PERIOD! Multi Generational residents!!! Compare affordable housing to market price development. It’s heavy on one side. Represent the people please, or Maui will continue to be another place where it’s out of control and mostly foreigners living here with no clue about its history.

Subject: Urgent: Request for Funding for Long-Term Housing Initiatives in West Maui
Dear BFED.Committee@mauicounty.us,
I am writing to urgently request that Maui County Council prioritize funding for long-term housing initiatives in West Maui, with a specific focus on the Kaiāulu o Kupuohi and Pulelehua projects. These initiatives are crucial in providing stable housing for the families and individuals affected by the devastating Lahaina fire, and it is imperative that their construction is expedited.
The fire's impact has left thousands of West Maui residents in precarious living situations, with many still residing in hotel rooms or unstable accommodations, even after nearly nine months since the incident. The closure of breakfast and lunch programs in these hotel settings further exacerbates the challenges faced by our community. Moreover, the shortage of housing options has forced more than a quarter of displaced individuals to leave the island.
Considering that 87% of the displaced residents are renters, the urgent need for affordable housing in West Maui cannot be overstated. Regrettably, no funding has been allocated for long-term housing projects in West Maui since the fire, exacerbating the housing crisis faced by affected families and individuals. I implore you to prioritize the construction of stable, long-term and dignified housing in West Maui.
I urge the Maui County Council to recognize the urgency of this matter and allocate the necessary funding to ensure that the Kaiāulu o Kupuohi and Pulelehua projects can move forward without delay. The well-being and stability of our community members depend on swift action.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
Mahalo,
Eric Keali'i Wahinehookae

The devastating impact of the fire has left thousands of West Maui residents in precarious living situations, with many still residing in hotel rooms or unstable accommodations even after almost nine months since the fire.
