Subject: SUPPORT for West Maui AFFORDABLE Housing
Aloha. As you all recognize the disastrous situation the 8/8/23 (Disaster #4724) fire has put our residents in, there has never been greater need for stable Affordable Rental Housing. Front St. Apt, was one such community which allowed for a wide range of residents to have stable housing. Many were the backbone of the hospitality industry with employment as cooks, waiters, sanitation and tour drivers. Affordable Housing using also allows for Senior Citizens to live safely and affordably after retirement as many are on a fixed income.
Current 'shovel ready' projects need completion asap as many Displaced Residents are yet sheltered in hotels sponsored by Government Agencies. These projects need PRIORITY for previous Lahaina residents who were displaced.
The Front Street Apartment Affordable Housing complex need be rebuilt, with past residents re-instated, since the contract continues as such through 2051. They must not be allowed to remove residents and cater to tourism (STR/VR/bNbs as they planned). New rules: Residents take priority.
We are in desperate straits, and this need be recognized, and prioritized.
Mahalo
Stay Safe
Anna M. Barbeau

Subject: Support West Maui Housing Projects
Aloha Maui County Council,
I am writing to urge the Maui County Council to prioritize funding for long-term housing initiatives in West Maui, particularly for the Kaiāulu o Kupuohi and Pulelehua projects. This is a very crucial need right now. These initiatives hold the key to providing stable housing for our families and individuals affected by the Lahaina fire, and their expedited construction is important.
The devastating impact of the fire has left thousands of West Maui residents in precarious living situations, with many still residing in hotel rooms or unstable accommodations even after almost nine months since the fire. The closure of breakfast and lunch programs in these hotel settings further highlights the challenges faced by our community. Additionally, more than a quarter of displaced individuals have been forced to leave the island due to the huge shortage of housing options. Our families need help now!
Given that 87% of displaced residents are renters, the need for affordable housing on West Maui is critically urgent. Since the fire, no funding has been allocated for long-term housing projects in West Maui, exacerbating the housing crisis for affected families and individuals. Please prioritize building stable long-term dignified housing in West Maui.
Mahalo,
Ann Williams

Additionally, more than a quarter of displaced individuals have been forced to leave the island due to the huge shortage of housing options.

Please include funding for affordable housing projects such as Kaiaulu o Kupuohi and Pulelehua.

Aloha Maui County Council,
For over 50 years, my generation never spoke up against the things that have created our Maui to be a place Hawaiians and generational locals can no longer afford to live. For a number of reasons: we trusted the decision makers; scared of retaliation; plantation mentality encouraged thinking we didnʻt understand the benefit. etc etc. Finally finding and using my voice, and urging my kūpuna ʻohana and friends to Speak Up!
Our kūpuna were in dire need of housing before August 8th, 2023 – and the need is greater now. Please prioritize Maui County kūpuna as occupants. No out of state applicants/occupants please.
I urge Maui County Council to prioritize funding for long-term housing initiatives in West Maui, particularly for the Kaiāulu o Kupuohi and Pulelehua projects.
Given that 87% of displaced residents are renters, the need for affordable housing on West Maui is critically urgent. Aloha and Mahalo for this opportunity to be able to testify.
We the people of Lahaina, Maui and Hawai'i need more affordable homes.
Before the fires and even more importantly after the fires we are in dire need of homes for local Hawai'i families!!!
Now more then ever we need homes!!!
We cannot lose more of our locals and have them leaving Hawai'i. How will we have a work force?
We need affordable homes before and now!!!
Please consider it now!!!
I would love for our kids and our friends and ohana to afford homes to stay on Maui.

Aloha Maui County Council,
I personally lived at Kaiāulu o Kupuohi before the fire and I urge Maui County Council to prioritize funding for long-term housing initiatives in West Maui for the Kaiāulu o Kupuohi and Pulelehua projects.
These initiatives hold the key to providing stable housing for our families and individuals affected by the Lahaina fire, and their expedited construction is important.
Me, my husband, and 2 kids lived in the hotels since the fire. Kaiāulu o Kupuohi was our first place we called home together. Having these housing opportunities will give hope to those who just want to be in something more longterm and stable. So many have been forced to leave the island due to the huge shortage of housing options.
Given that 87% of displaced residents are renters, the need for affordable housing on West Maui is critically urgent. Since the fire, no funding has been allocated for long-term housing projects in West Maui, exacerbating the housing crisis for affected families and individuals.
