Aloha Maui County Council,
My name is Lindsay and I have been a Lahaina resident for 10 years and lost my home in the fire. I have seen first hand how difficult it is to find housing for all of our friends and family and have felt the pain from losing so many of our community due to lack of housing. I urge Maui County Council to prioritize funding for long-term housing initiatives in West Maui, particularly for the Kaiāulu o Kupuohi and Pulelehua projects. These initiatives hold the key to providing stable housing for our families and individuals affected by the Lahaina fire, and their expedited construction is important.
The devastating impact of the fire has left thousands of West Maui residents in precarious living situations, with many still residing in hotel rooms or unstable accommodations even after almost nine months since the fire. The closure of breakfast and lunch programs in these hotel settings further highlights the challenges faced by our community. Additionally, more than a quarter of displaced individuals have been forced to leave the island due to the huge shortage of housing options. More of our Lahaina residents now live on the mainland than ever before!
Given that 87% of displaced residents are renters, the need for affordable housing on West Maui is critically urgent! Since the fire, no funding has been allocated for long-term housing projects in West Maui, exacerbating the housing crisis for affected families and individuals. Please prioritize building stable long-term dignified housing in West Maui. It is the only way that we will be able to keep our community intact and continue to give back to the west maui businesses and work at essential jobs for the economy.

Aloha,
I am happy to hear that budget priority is going to West Maui housing developments. Especially for affordable housing. Please ensure that the Kupuohi apartments and Pulelehua receive the funds they need to get fire survivors housed.
While I wish that more units in Pulelehua were available for purchase, I understand that funding can be an issue. It would be great to find a way to provide affordable housing and still giving folks a path to ownership, but right now we just need to get a roof over so many heads.
Please let the public know if funding these projects will come with any road infrastructure improvements? Especially with Kupuohi being one of the first housing developments in Lahaina, it would be much safer if Keawe St. wasn’t the main artery in and out of Lahaina. We hope that rebuilding Lahaina will include extension of the bypass as a necessity for public safety.
