As a west side resident that lost their home in the fire, please help us expedite the progress of this affordable housing that is so desperately needing. If the project is able to move forward safely with the removal of the conditions, then this is what the community wants and needs. Mahalo for your consideration.
I SUPPORT moving forward with this housing project. But please offer housing for both low income AND middle class. I make just over the limit for the huge housing rental project on the Lahaina bypass. But do not make enough to afford buying my own place here on the west side.
Affordable housing is must needed in Lahaina. As a citizen born in Maui raised in Lahaina, I would love to own my first home in a nice neighborhood that I can actually afford.
I support this project, however I would like to see more affordable houses for SALE for us locals to own a home to pass down to our future generations so they can live on island as well.
I was burned out of Kupuohi. I sign this only if I'm allowed to retain my 3 bed room unit. I need all stipulations I must meet to regain my affordable housing.
Please allow Pulelehua long-term affordable rental housing project and do whatever it takes to remove barriers that have stood in the way of construction. Including the county dragging their feet on this project like they did with the Front Street Housing saying that they would help when they actually just kept changing and rewording the bills to save the complex from converting to market rate for over two years. Then when we one with a Federal lawsuit they then bought the ground from the Weinberg Foundation and said they were going to claim eminent Domain on the lease holder because he was a poor landlord who broke his contract . Instead they gave him 35 extra years on his lease and millions more in subsidy breaks which allowed him to sell the contract for even more money than he previously could. Then after the fire the tenants were all kicked to the curb and their contracts were all canceled and they were told they could not return to their homes once rebuilt. WHAT A CRIME To the community and the people of Maui !!!
I have prepared and submitted testimony before with the Front Street apartments and fought in litigation for over two years with absolutely no help from the county. It is sad to thing that they are going to do this with Puleiehua which has been in the wait for approval for 15 years. Giving the community 24 to 48 hours to testify every time they reword or change the bill. It appears that the county does not want to share the island with any one. Please prove me wrong and approve this site. We desperately need affordable housing.
All these affordable housing projects just make the rich richer and poor as modern day slaves. This isn’t a way to accrue generational wealth. This is a way for low income people to get their whole paycheck taken by rent. To qualify for this housing, you must be fairly low income and the rent is so high that it takes most of your paycheck. It perpetuates people on the system, depending on food stamps. Instead, this should be available to purchase for the workforce. Instead, locals are having to move out because we can’t build generational wealth. It was Jeff Bezos who helped fund Pulelehua. If asked, he would definitely help make it affordable housing to buy. I know that for a fact. I asked him if he could help our homeless situation on Maui and he dumped $8 million into homeless shelters at the drop of a hat. The only person in the way is Tamara Paltin.
Absolutely we support this project ! Maui needs affordable housing for our people especially people from Lahaina ! Please remove these barriers so we can get back on track and rebuild our community and make Lahaina a fun beautiful town with lots of Ulu trees
While we have a need for affordable housing in West Maui, we also have a need to be able to provide safe, clean drinking water to the community. Transitioning existing short-term rentals into long-term rentals is a more logical, sustainable route for the county to take rather than new builds. The West Maui mountains are dryer than they have ever been. We need to be extremely cautious before we have no water left.
