Please support bill 34. It is low income housing for families. We know that some families have already moved, we know that not all families qualify for FEMA, we have created a secondary housing crisis, tenants are not getting their leases renewed and are losing their housing with nowhere to go. This is a priority project in the Maui Housing plan and The House Maui plan.

Make West Maui Affordable Housing a Priority & not just rentals. Affordable homes people can OWN vs. continue to pay corporate landlords.

Since the fire I moved 4 times and landed at Hyatt where I’ve been for 5 months. I have been offered to move off island or to the mainland all expenses paid by FEMA. I also was offered an ohana unit somewhere in Wailuku with no information on the property. At the risk of loosing my current housing and being dropped by the direct housing program I refused to move from West Maui. The majority of my immediate family ( children and grandchildren) are on the west side. I lived in Lahaina most of my life, my children were raised in Lahaina, went to school and played sports in Lahaina. This is my community and I refuse to be forced to move away. We need long term housing for people of West Maui! And soon, the problem with indecision is costing a lot of $ not to mention the anxiety of the people relying on someone to act. Please build what we need to remain where our hearts are. I would be completely happy to be in a tiny home or a container home. Most of us are traumatized from the fire. Personally I wake up with anxiety every morning over the uncertainty of my future. I have lived on Maui for 55 years, most of that time in Lahaina. You can ask anyone who lives in Lahaina, it is a special place. The feeling of community when you run into people at Foodland and stop to talk story. Watching our children grow up and now watching my grandchildren growing up here. Mine is one plea to let me remain where my heart is. There are many more.

Lahaina is in a state of emergency, and it is imperative that resources are allocated to address the pressing housing needs here first. Families are facing unprecedented challenges, and their well-being should be the priority.

As a strong advocate for affordable housing islandwide, I must say I am in total opposition of Bills 34 and 35. Those projects slated for approval may be good but we must care for our Westside Ohana first and foremost. Prior to Aug 8th, their residence was Lahaina. They should not be forced to live away from their job. Kids should attend schools where they live near neighbors and friends. This is what builds a strong Community and Stable lifestyle. Please consider Westside the priority for any upcoming housing projects. Mahalo!

I oppose Bill 34 2024 - now is the time to take care of residents of West Maui. There has been overdevelopment of hotels, timeshares and now short term rentals for decades, it’s time to focus development on affordable housing in Lahaina before anything else . Lahaina has always been an afterthought for vital necessities, housing, the bypass road that took 20+ yrs and is still incomplete, a hospital and care for our schools.
We are the most visited side of the island and should be given a lot more care and attention especially for our keiki and kupuna. We need to stop treating the Westside like a stepchild. Mahalo!
