As a born and raised resident of maui, this would be a great opportunity for myself and other maui generational families to keep their lands from selling. My great grandfather purchased 50 acres in Olinda in 1950 and we currently are struggling to keep it in our hands and the future families name. Please support this bill!

Aloha mai e ka ʻaha kūkā o ke Kalana o Maui,

My name is Hoʻoleia Kaʻeo. I am a Maui resident and I am also a kupa of this place because my kūpuna are from this mokupuni. I am writing to strongly SUPPORT the passage of the ʻĀina Kūpuna Tax Relief Bill; to amend Chapter 3.48, Maui County Code, to add a section relating to taxes on parcels dedicated as ʻāina kūpuna.
Land taxes have been skyrocketing due to the booming real estate market catered to the mega-rich. Luxury, empty vacation homes, and temporary vacation rentals now border ʻāina of many Hawaiian families. The strain of rising land taxes and inability to afford them have been another mechanism of removal and dispossession of Hawaiians from their ʻāina kūpuna. In addition, most local and Hawaiian families are already no longer able afford the purchase of property in our own homeland. The county must act to mitigate these issues and ensure that the the ʻāina that our kūpuna born, lived, and are buried on, that have been kept in families generationally, are kept in perpetuity to ʻohana. The profit the County will incur from settler capitalists will never amount to the aloha that families have for their ʻāina kūpuna.

Mahalo nui to Council member Keani Rawlins-Fernandez for proposing this bill. I kindly ask the Council to consider the long-term consequences and pass the ʻĀina Kūpuna Tax Relief Bill.

    Me ka haʻahaʻa,
    Hoʻoleia Kaʻeo

Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee
    Hon. Keani Rawlins-Fernandez, Chair
    Hon. Tamara Paltin, Vice Chair

Chair Rawlins-Fernandez, Vice Chair Paltin and members of the Budget, Finance and Economic Development Committee:

I am providing testimony on behalf of Mākena Golf & Beach Club. Thank you for the opportunity to provide testimony in strong support of item BFED 78.

Maintaining ‘āina kūpuna in Hawai‘i over the last century has been an arduous task for many kama‘āina families – Maui in particular. We have witnessed families choose between struggling to maintain property tax payments or pay for day-to-day living expenses.

Incentivizing the maintenance of lineal descendancy in landownership through affordable property taxes is one of the best methods to ensure that our ‘ohana continues to call this place home.

As a developer in Hawai‘i, we understand our unique position at Mākena Golf & Beach Club. With that unique position comes a unique kuleana to understand how we impact ‘āina, ‘ohana and kaiāulu and to ensure that the people and families around us who have called these lands home for generations are not impacted by our projects.

In Hawai‘i, the lowest property tax rate is provided to owners of properties deemed historic. We should afford the same consideration to property owners who have maintained family properties over generations.

Thank you for the opportunity to provide testimony.

    Mahalo,
    Ka‘imi Judd
    Vice President
    Mākena Golf & Beach Club

Aloha, i am Puaena Poplardo.I believe that The hawaiians who own land and have been passed down from generation to generation should not be taxed (AT ALL) or even the same as all the other million dollar homes go up around them...It's already hard enough for us Hawaiian's to just rent a place here in Hawaii, Let alone Own any land because of how expensive it is and all of The Outsiders coming in and buying. I support this bill a 100% due to this affecting my own family.
