I am in support of BFED-78 regarding tax exemptions for ʻĀina Kūpuna land. I have been living in Mākena for the past 3 years on my wife’s family property. This land has been in my wife’s family for generations and there has been a tremendous amount of development around the property. In just my 3 years of living in Mākena, I have witnessed mansions being built right on the beach front by five graves, luxury condos being built on the Mauka side of Wailea, and now Mākena resort will be building up right next door to our property. Our family is literally being pushed out of our home due to the development that will cost our family to pay such high property taxes. The property taxes will only continue to increase and leave us with no choice but to move. With this tax exemption for ʻĀina kupuna land, it will give our family and other families in similar situations an opportunity to continue to pass down their land to the next generation and continue to live sustainable through agricultural practices such as our family does. This bill will allow Hawaiian families to stay on their land and their home. It will allow Hawaiian families to not be forced to leave their home because of the continuous development on Maui. Most importantly, this bill will allow the legacy of Hawaiian families and culture to thrive and be passed down to our next generation.
