I fully support the renewal of Maui Nui Botanical Garden’s lease. It is extremely important that this land is dedicated to native Hawaiian plants and cultural practices. I support this because this garden serves all members of our community. The access to native plants that maui nui provides is important to sustaining native ecosystems through understanding and planting native plants.
Maui Nui botanical gardens is a beautiful place to preserve, honor, and share knowledge about local plants and Hawaiian culture. The preservation of this land and these gardens also preserves the power of education and community. I strongly support the lease extension for Maui Nui.
I wholeheartedly support the lease renewal of Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. This beautiful, educational space should be allowed to continue to operate. Their programs for schools are engaging and informative. The space itself is a haven in the community.
Please grant the lease extension for Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. This organization is a vital part of our communities education around native plants and cultural heritage. It is important that we support an organization that has worked so hard to educate and connect our community around its culture and environment.
I support the extension of the lease of the Maui Nui Botanical Garden. This garden has been a beloved part our Maui community for over 15 years. Generations of locals will only continue to benefit from learning, preserving and growing plants native to Hawaii.
We need more native Hawaiian nurseries on Maui. Maui botanical gardens supports hawaiian culture and organizations and we need more of that here. They continue to share knowledge about plants and culture. We need to be able to persevere native plants and Maui Botanical Gardens plays a big role in that.
The gardens has always been my go-to place to see mature, healthy native plants before I plant in my own garden. And it's a great source of plant keikis. It's a beautiful place to picnic and hosts wonderful, entertaining, educational events (La `Ulu comes to mind). The gardens are tended by people who are passionate about their work, and they and the gardens deserve our full support and continuing lease.
I support the continued land lease to the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. It provides tremendous educational resources around Hawaiian native plants for our children as well as for other residents and visitors. It also offers an excellent venue for certain community events. The nursery provides plants for projects at other locations as well. The Arbor Day tree giveaways are highly appreciated by Maui residents.
I LOVE the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and have watched them over the years as they continue to expand their services/offerings to the community..besides being a great resource to research plants by seeing what is in the garden, they host awesome informative events to bring awareness of the native plants that are available..I love that they do free plant giveaways on Mondays and have different plant sales each Thursday - it makes it so much easier to grow natives in your own garden with their help! The staff is amazing and Tamara's dedication to the organization shows. I think they are a huge benefit to the community and 500% support the extension of their lease - I can't think of a better use for that property..in fact, they should have more land!!
My wife and I donated $1,000 to Maui Nui Botanical Gardens last year (you can check on it) because we so strongly believe in the work they do. It's extremely important to preserve the botanical legacy found by the first who arrived on the island. My wife Melanie was born and raised in Hawaii and taught me to love and appreciate the islands and their history. Melanie says that by its extensive outreach efforts, Maui Nui has involved everyone from keikis to our kupunas to value and preserve native plants.
Please renew the Maui Nui lease; citizens of Maui deserve no less!
Thank you for allowing us to comment.

As a docent and enthusiastic member of Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, it is my strong sense of caring for the cultural heritage of our island community and the preservation of our remaining native environment and ecosystems that drives my support for the mission of MNBG. The professionalism, hard work, admirable capability and dedication of the MNBG staff to the preservation of Maui's native flora, both indigenous and endemic, through the physical gardens as well as its many educational programs for both local community and visitors alike is worthy of the support of Maui County. MNBG is a treasured resource, historically and currently. The garden's focus on ethnobotany helps our community understand and maintain its relationship to the 'aina, protecting our unique heritage for future generations.

My name is Cody Pueo Pata, and I am a Kumu Hula, Hawaiian Music Entertainer, and Language & Culture Educator from the island of Maui. From my time as an Environmental Science student in high school (℅ '93, Baldwin), my years as a student of hula, to this very day in my areas of expertise, I have been fortunate enough to access Maui Nui Botanical Gardens on a regular basis. For Hula, traditional medicines, and crafts, many of the plants upon which we rely are rare, or in sensitive areas in the natural environment. Maui Nui Botanical Gardens has always been a reliable source for us from which to harvest when needed, thus alleviating pressure on wild populations.
My family, friends, students, and I have also benefited from the countless plant sales, plant giveaways, public events, and workshops offered by the Gardens. The frequent dissemination of such plants, knowledge, and resources back into the community is extremely important to both the Hawaiian culture and Local population of Maui County. In these times of climate change, the traditional crop resources and drought-resistant plants which they disseminate are treasured for their hardiness and time-tested dependability for current and future generations of Maui County residents. And, because Maui Nui Botanical Gardens also hosts some extremely rare species, some of which are sparse, if not extinct, in the wild, it is an entirely invaluable resource for not only the Hawaiian Archipelago, but for the botanical heritage of the world.
As such, I respectfully request that you grant a lease extension to Maui Nui Botanical Gardens––a unique treasure of Maui Nui and Hawaiʻi nei.
