I am in support of this measure to place a moratorium on new building permits for hotels and transient lodging and urge the council to expand the moratorium island-wide. This is long overdue. Visitor numbers are well beyond responsible sustainable numbers and are impacting quality of life, visitor experience, and natural resources. Legislative action is needed to cap tourism and build a diversified economy to benefit residents.
I have been blessed to live and work in Kihei for 20 years. I live on South Kihei Road and the traffic is unbelievable. There are times that it takes me up to 10 minutes just to exit my home and to turn onto south kihei road because the traffic is so bad. Please re-think the decision before adding this hotel / more rooms. I am worried for the future of Kihei.
I support the moratorium! The locals are being chased out of their own state! Please stop!!
Please don’t wait until the emergency happens - it will be too late. Out infrastructure cannot handle any more 🛑🛑🛑
We need to focus on our full time residents here on Maui . Affordable housing, infrastructure and education all highly lacking here on Maui. Srop catering to out of towners.. Foucs on Maui and Maui will focus on you..
I support a moratorium. The lockdown of the tourism industry has clearly shown we need to spend county energy on diversifying with industries that don't rely on tourism. We need industry that has something we can export out....not just tourists in.
I support the moratorium on new visitor accommodation building permits county wide. Visitors have a direct impact on the lives of residents, the infrastructure of Maui County, the water supply of Maui County, land use and shore and ocean health. The amount of tourists is well beyond what is healthy for the islands. Tourism does not provide jobs which provide a sustainable living for workers.
Tourism benefits owners of hotels, restaurants and some shops. Many businesses are not locally owned and profits leave the area.
There are too many tourists here. The moratorium is necessary to stop reckless expansion. Quality instead of quantity. What does that mean?
I support this moratorium for ALL of Maui County. We are already overstretched beyond the capacity of our island’s infrastructure to support more tourism without any caps or regulation. The island is so packed residents can’t enjoy the beaches, Tourists’ rental cars are clogging the roads esp. the road to Hana creating unsafe conditions, tresspassing on private property, not heeding ocean safety warnings and most importantly we have a housing crisis that needs to be addressed. Let’s take time to come up with a solid plan rather than just build more vacation rentals!
I support the moratorium on building permits for visitor accommodation . We need to diversify our economy and support alternative endeavors. Our island is a finite area - our roads our beaches our lifestyle cannot withstand continued laser focus in over development in tourism. We are now needing to import workers for what exists and have a lack of affordable housing to support our existing community and upcoming future generations.
I’m for a moratorium on building permits for visitor accommodations. Stop crowding Maui. We have too many visitors already crowding our roads, streets and beaches.
I support the moratorium against building more hotel rooms. We desperately need housing for working families...not more visitor accommodations. Our infrastructure cannot handle the current amount of tourism. And our quality of life is suffering. We are ruining our home.
I support a moratorium on hotel building for ALL of Maui. We already have an inbalnce of residents to visitors. The Maui Island Plan supports 3 residents to 1 Visitor. Until this balance is achieved there should NOT be and new visitor accommodations.
Maui's infrastructure and natural resources cannot sustain the numbers of pre-COVID numbers of tourists without serious negative impact. The current resurgence of tourism is already having this negative impact on our community, and our island. Enough is enough! Mahalo
By early 2020 Maui had reached a level of "hyper tourism" that was not sustainable or acceptable. The development of all new accommodations for tourists from hotels to vacation condos must stop until a plan for sustainable tourism can be developed and implemented. The current level of tourism on Maui is coming back to the the early 2020 levels. We cannot allow that to happen.
My partner and I strongly support this moratorium. The planning department should aspire to preserve the quality of life on Maui for residents and visitors alike. Our business is both kamaaina and tourist dependent, but we feel Maui has become too busy, which truly does not serve the visitors or the residents. Keep Maui sustainable, healthy, and beautiful for residents and visitors to both enjoy. Mahalo
It is well past time to invoke a moratorium on new visitor accommodations. The existing Maui County Plan called for a limit of 50,000 visitors at max and it was exceeded by 50% in 2019. Why bother creating a new Maui Plan if its content is ignored. Kihei where we live is currently gridlocked in May, a usual off peak month for visitors. Can we have some common sense planning please. Pass a moratorium. David and Mary Reader 2531 S. Kihei Road
I STRONGLY SUPPORT THE MORATORIUM ON BUILDING PERMIT FOR ADDITIONAL VISITOR ACCOMMODATIONS. THE INFRASTRUCURE , PUBLIC PARKS/BEACHES CANNOT MAINTAIN THE LEVEL OF TOURISTS AND RESIDENTS. WE NEED TO GET A REASONABLE SOLUTION OF HOW TO DEAL WITH THE IMBALANCE BEFORE MORE BUILDING MORE (INCLUDING THE "EXPANSION" OF THE MAUI COAST HOTEL WHICH THE PLANNING COMMISSION SEEMED DETERMINED TO APPROVE REGARDLESS OF THE OUTCRY OF OPPOSITION OF RESIDENTS ABOUT THE EXPANSION (APPRX 85-90% OF COMMENTS ON THE PLANNING MEETING WERE OPPOSED!).

Let’s focus on quality over quantity and community over tourists. Let’s work out the existing problems before adding to them.

Make affordable housing before all these places force residents out of the state.

stop building for tourism! Take care of your local community! Honor sustainable tourism. Quality not Quantity- enough
