We urgently need a moratorium on visitor accommodations. Don't make the same mistake that O'ahu made. Keep Maui beautiful, with natural resources. The current load of tourism is not sustainable. Our oceans, reef, mountains, streams, ponds will be damaged beyond repair if this continues!
I support the Moratorium. Enough already. Too many hotels, resorts, airbnb, and condo’s. Not enough affordable housing for the people of Hawai’i. Please give Maui a rest!!
The limit on building tourist oriented structures has to be approved for the sake of protecting the infrastructure as well as our precious resources. We are at a very crucial time right now due to the overrun areas that tourist have been directed to visit through a very, very unnecessary guide book giving tourist the exact locations to visit even though most are on private property. Our local community is getting very irritated at tourist and this problematic to the “aloha spirit” that they expect. Soon , and I’ve seen it already, there will be no aloha for visitors and how will that benefit Maui. Use your heads and realize that we cannot keep on building for tourist when we so need housing for our residents. Too much emphasis on visitors is leading us in the wrong direction. Protect the remainder of our island. Stop the greed that’s gone on for years. Enough already.
I'm a voter in Makawao. Please extend the moratorium to cover all of Maui county and pass this bill. We need development to go towards reasonably priced housing and improved infrastructure. Mahalo.
Enough hotels! Enoygh accommodations for tourists. Developers, construction companies, we desperately need TRULY AFFORDABLE housing for local families!
We need this moratorium to pause the tourism in Sudbury growth until we can come up with a sustainable plan fot the future. Currently rates of visitor spending do not justify the number of visitors.
Until Maui can get to 20% imported food, instead of 90%....the island resources are stressed and not sustainable. Stop damaging the island with more unsustainable tourism.
A more sustainable visitor industry is needed and will not only improve local residents quality of life, but result in a more positive vacation experience.
Please support this necessary moratorium on building permits for visitor accommodation on all of Maui. As a born and raised Maui resident, I am saddened by how overrun with tourist our island has become. The construction industry should be busy building housing for Maui residents instead of rooms for tourist. Please use your power as County Councilors to make this courageous decision and vote yes.
Please pass IT-54 and extend it to all of Maui county! We need to focus more on our residents and native Hawaiian families that are losing their homes and unable to afford their living situations.
Please pass IT-54! I grew up in Honolulu, lived there all my life until I moved to Maui to find more green spaces and less population. Maui is such a special place unto all the world. We understand that tourists want to experience the peace and beauty found here, but it needs to be regulated in order to preserve the island magic. Remember the story of the goose that laid the golden egg? If you kill the goose - no more gold. The best way to regulate the amount of visitors allowed at one time is to limit the lodging options. This Moratorium on building permits for visitor accommodations is an akamai action, please show your wisdom and pass it!
I support the moratorium on building permits for visitor accommodations because we do not have the infrastructure to support more and more tourists, for example, roads, parking lots, waste water treatment and water supply. The planning department needs to focus on what Maui can handle at this present time. If you have over 70% of the population being tourist who is going to work and support these hotels, will the work force be shipped in and added to the overpopulation. Of course we do need to grow, but not at this speed. We need the planning department to present a plan thats acceptable before moving forward.
Maui, and especially south Kihei/Wailea's, infrastructure can not sustain the numbers of pre-COVID tourism without serious negative impact. The current resurgence of tourism, already outpacing last years numbers, is already having a detrimental impact on our community, and the aina. There is definitely a lack of aloha spirit and rightfully so. The lack of planning and forethought, during the lockdown, as to how we could curb the influx of visitors post-Covid, has put us on a collision course with the Island reaching a tipping point in regards to our natural resources. Please pause this reckless expansion of visitor accommodations!!
Please pass IT-54, the moratorium on more building. Traffic in Kihei is getting crowded on the Mokulele Hwy, the Piilani Hwy and on Kihei Rd. Of course we need tourism, but I think we're at the saturation point. We don't need more.
I support the moratorium. I moved to AZ from MN in 1987 and watched the beautiful Arizona desert slowly get consumed by tall commercial high-rise buildings that once could only go 2-3 stories. We moved from AZ to Maui almost 8 years ago to get away from traffic jams, increased pollution, and stress from too many people. We picked Maui for its slow pace of life, coastal beauty, simplicity, and charm and we want it to stay that way. Please, please, please stop all new development. Why not fix up buildings we already have and do us all a favor by limiting the number of tourist!
Please pause the development to allow time to clarify the housing needs of existing residents too much tourism will have Maui County racing to be another Oahu!
Thank you,
William Prucha

Spend the money updating the current hotels

Please modify this proposed bill to include all of Maui County, not just South and West Maui.

I also support the Moratorium - lets focus on local residents and putting our community first!
