Dear Chair Batangan, Vice-Chair U’u-Hodgins, and members of the committee,

My name is Micah Saula. I am a Fire Fighter I with the Maui Fire Department and a proud HFFA Local 1463 member. I am writing in strong support of Resolution 26-133.

This resolution approves the additional cost items for the Bargaining Unit 11 collective bargaining agreement based on the settlement our members ratified with the employer group. It matters because it helps firefighters keep up with the cost of living on Maui. Our wages have not kept pace with what it actually costs to live and raise a family here, and the wage adjustments and step progression in this settlement are a real step toward closing that gap.

Approving these cost items honors the collective bargaining process and helps us keep experienced firefighters here at home instead of losing them to places where their pay goes further.
I respectfully urge the committee to adopt Resolution 26-133.

Thank you for helping us live in the communities we serve.

Dear Chair Batangan, Vice-Chair Uʻu-Hodgins, and members of the committee,

My name is Carter Suzuki and I am a Fire Fighter III with the Maui Fire Department writing in strong support of Resolution 26-133.

Although I have not yet started a family, the rising cost of living has made it difficult, even on my own, on a fire fighter's salary alone. Like many of my coworkers, I personally have side work just to keep up, and even finding these jobs is difficult due to our unique schedules and, somtimes, mandatory overtime obligations.

I am so fortunate to be able to serve the island wher I was born and raised, but I believe we should be able to afford to live in the community we serve without relying on multiple jobs to make ends meet. This becomes even more important for my fellow brothers and sisters who are currently raising or are about to have children.

This resolution is a step in the right direction.

I respectfully ask the committee to support Resolution 26-133 and the fire fighters and families it represents.

Dear Chair Batangan, Vice-Chair Uʻu-Hodgins, and members of the committee,

My name is Kaui Maioho. I am a Firefighter I with the Maui Fire Department and a proud member of HFFA Local 1463. I am writing to show my strong support for Resolution 26-133.

Living on Molokai is expensive, and the cost of everything from housing and groceries to raising a family continues to go up. As a firefighter, I want to be able to continue living in the community I serve and provide a good life for my family. Right now, my wife is pregnant and out of work, while we are also helping and worrying about close family members who are dealing with serious health issues. The rising cost of living puts even more pressure on families like ours.

The wage adjustments and step progression included in this settlement are important because they help firefighters keep up with the real cost of living. These increases are not just numbers on a paycheck—they directly affect our ability to support our families, stay in our communities, and continue serving the people of Maui County.

Approving these cost items also honors the collective bargaining process and the agreement that our members ratified. It will help the Maui Fire Department retain experienced firefighters instead of losing good people to places where they can afford to live more comfortably.

I respectfully ask the committee to adopt Resolution 26-133 and support the firefighters who live and serve in our communities.

Thank you for taking the time to hear our concerns and for supporting the men and women who protect Maui County.

    Aloha,

My name is Kelsey Manning I am a FFII at Rescue 10 with Maui County Fire department. I am in strong support of 26-133 as it helps in the attempt to give a livable wage for firefighters in Hawaii. As the cost of living increases, it is more and more challenging to live and raise a family here, and passing this resolution is a step in the right direction for keeping our public servants here, serving our communities.

    Thank you for your time,

Dear Chair Batangan, Vice-Chair U’u-Hodgins, and members of the committee,

My name is Mark Walker Jr. I am a FFIII with the Maui Fire Department and a proud HFFA Local 1463 member. I am writing in strong support of Resolution 26-133.

At the conclusion of the previous mediation with the lesser wage adjustment and step movements, my family was devastated. After getting promoted to my current position earlier that year, I was working at a lesser step movements during my probationary promotional period. When the step movements were dropped, it meant I would be stuck at a 3-7 year pay scale when at the end of this contract I would have 13 years of service. This had realistically made the wage benefits of my promotion virtually void, costing tens of thousands to me and my family during the course of the contract.

I love my island and my community, and am honored to get to serve the place that has given me so much throughout my life. However, life costs money, and without the renewed mediation and adjustment to our wages and step movements, my ability to provide a life for my family on Maui was becoming more and more grim. Adopting this resolution will go a long ways towards giving our firefighters a chance to remain and serve the place they love, and will help bolster our firefighter recruitment and retention, which have both suffered greatly in the last 5-10 years.

I respectfully urge the committee to adopt Resolution 26-133.

Thank you for helping us live in the communities we serve.
    Sincerely,
    Mark Walker Jr, FFIII

Coming from personal experience. My partner is also a firefighter and living together with both of our wages is hard. We are living honestly paycheck to paycheck unless we pick up overtime. Our schedules don't allow us to pick up a second job that expects a set schedule from us.

Thank you for helping us live in the communities we serve.

Aloha Chair Batangan, Vice-Chair U’u-Hodgins, and members of the committee,

My name is Ka’aukai Rowland. I am a firefighter with the Maui Fire Department and a proud member of HFFA Local 1463. I’m writing to express my strong support for Resolution 26-133.

As firefighters living and working on Maui, we see firsthand how expensive it has become to live here. The cost of housing, groceries, gas, and just about everything else continues to go up, while our wages make it difficult to keep up. The wage adjustments and step increases included in this agreement are an important step toward addressing that concern.

We want to continue living here, raising our families here, and serving the communities we call home. Supporting this resolution helps make that possible.
