My name is Kalae Martin. I am writing in strong support of Resolution 26-133.
As a wife of a Maui Fire Captain of 27 years. I have experienced first hand the many sacrifices our fire fighters make for their families and communities. Balancing day to day duties at work can be quite challenging mentally, physically and emotionally. Yet their work doesn’t end there because most go home to family life and have to take off “one cap to put on another” to be a partner, spouse, grandparent, caretaker etc. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see many firefighters have a second or third job to provide for their family. That was exactly the case for us. We were working full time jobs, raising a family and serving our community. It goes without saying that balance was difficult but it required grit, communication and support of ‘ohana to make day to day life work. With this in mind having multiple jobs does take a toll on the very families they are providing for. Time is something we cherish and if they have to be called to work and be absent to the very family they are providing defeats the purpose. Therefore it is important that we keep our firefighters who malama our community with compassion and care in upmost consideration and priority. Please I ask of you to pass resolution 26-133 that will help reinstate some of the benefits lost at arbitration.

My name is Kalae Martin. I am writing in strong support of Resolution 26-133.
As a wife of a Maui Fire Captain of 27 years. I have experienced first hand the many sacrifices our fire fighters make for their families and communities. Balancing day to day duties at work can be quite challenging mentally, physically and emotionally. Yet their work doesn’t end there because most go home to family life and have to take off “one cap to put on another” to be a partner, spouse, grandparent, caretaker etc. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see many firefighters have a second or third job to provide for their family. That was exactly the case for us. We were working full time jobs, raising a family and serving our community. It goes without saying that balance was difficult but it required grit, communication and support of ‘ohana to make day to day life work. With this in mind having multiple jobs does take a toll on the very families they are providing for. Time is something we cherish and if they have to be called to work and be absent to the very family they are providing defeats the purpose. Therefore it is important that we keep our firefighters who malama our community with compassion and care in upmost consideration and priority. Please I ask of you to pass resolution 26-133 that will help reinstate some of the benefits lost at arbitration.
