It appears that our government cares more for the tourists as they opened the west side to tourism before taking care of the people that lost our houses to the fire.
So sad that they are now again putting their greed ahead of our needs.
Honorable Members of the Maui County Council Budget, Finance, and Economic Development Committee,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to Bill 35, which proposes the allocation of $24 million for housing projects in central Maui. As a concerned resident deeply invested in the well-being of our community, I implore the council to reconsider the location of these housing projects and to reevaluate the allocation of resources to instead address the critical housing needs in West Maui.
In light of the current financial constraints articulated by both the county and state, it is imperative to critically assess the decision to allocate $24 million towards housing projects in central Maui rather than West Maui. It is essential to ensure that these funds are directed towards addressing the most urgent and impactful needs of our community.
There is an acute need for long-term housing options for Lāhainā residents so that they may rebuild the community of West Maui.By directing attention and resources towards addressing this pressing need, we can ensure the well-being and stability of our people who ave been displaced by the August 8th fire.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and I urge the council to carefully consider the significant impact of this decision for our community.
The biggest need is in lahaina, rebuilding there to house people, they are the number one priority. IF the concerned is the house less population in Kahului/Wailuku is growing, that’s because the housing opportunities are here, including finding an affordable place to rent and the tiny house areas. Please prioritize rebuilding what was lost.
I oppose Bill 35. Affordable housing in West Maui should be the priority. There are thousands of displaced residents. There is so much uncertainty. There was already a housing crisis before the Lahaina fire due to decisions made by previous administrations. People are leaving the island and the state. When that happens, the workforce and the workplace suffers. Please do what is right.
Any funding should prioritize housing, rentals and for sale, in West Maui before any other area. We are your responsibility. Stop leaving us out of these decisions. Why is the administration having secret committees make decisions? Where’s the transparency. This is fiscally irresponsible with no plans or cost projections. I hope the media will expose all of these shenanigans. If $24 million gets spent on housing in Central Maui before West Maui is taken care of shame on all of you.
Aloha, I oppose Bill 35 because the housing needs in Lahaina should come first. Housing that is 1 hour or more away from Lahaina is not realistic. Build affordable housing in Lahaina.
I oppose the Bill 35 project until Lahaina’s emergency need for housing is fulfilled and the Lahaina bypass is completed to become a bypass, provide an emergency exit road, from working class neighborhoods and provide a natural fire break for the next fire in Lahaina and kaanapali. Kaanapali has had 5 fires and two evacuations since the Lahaina fire disaster.
Lahaina needs fast tracked help now.
Sincerely
Robin
I support this affordable housing project and I support all efforts to support Lahaina fire victims. This is a good project that deserves to be moved forward. We need housing everywhere. Please support it.

Focus on West Maui first, cannot believe this needs to be said.

More affordable housing is needed should be first on the agenda.

I Leslie jaramillo oppose to this Bill making Lahaina a priority to rebuild with these funds
