NO to T-groins and artificial beaches.
YES to nature based solution like dune restoration, supporting the landward migration of our beaches, and managed retreat.

I have been a Maui County Taxpayer for decades. I'm also a Maui County resident. Pastor Lucky with his Hawaiian conch shell spoke eloquently at the January West Maui Taxpayers Association meeting about "Living Aloha". Why do we have so much animosity toward protecting our homes? These coastal homes were built & approved in an effort to bring money, jobs, and security to our island. People like me brought our life savings to this island for a chance to live aloha before I die. I am not the enemy. Live aloha - Maui No Ka Oi.
Kahana Reef Resident
There is little to no public beach access there. If they are to make any improvements it must be required that they provide beach access and parking for residents only. Impacts to surfing needs to be addressed as well.
I am a Maui County Taxpayer, concerned with preserving not just our property but all properties on West Maui.
As a professional engineer, I wholeheartedly support the proposed beach-restoration project, including the idea of maintaining public access. It's a win-win situation for everyone.
Opposing the project would be detrimental to the community. If buildings along West Maui shores become damaged beyond repair, or worse, begin falling in the ocean, Maui County will lose a major tax base and burden remaining residents with increased taxes. The costs to the beautiful coastline would be devastating. To move forward swiftly, I urge the Maui County Council to expedite the Community Facilities District (CFD) establishment. The cost of the CFD is significantly less than the tax revenue collected from Kahana Bay properties over decades. Let's view it as a prudent measure to safeguard our future. I ask for your support in preserving West Maui’s natural beauty, sustaining the Maui economy, and securing a vibrant future for locals and people who call Maui home.
Thank you for your consideration and for your service to the Maui community.
I am against using this method to mitigate shoreline erosion in Kahana Bay. I feel that it would impact the natural flow of the ocean more than it is currently doing to the detriment of other shoreline areas.
1. As a Maui resident and not a malahini, I want to preserve my home at Kahana Reef. To me, Kahana Reef is not a hotel. It is where I live.
2. I fully support the proposed groins-and-sand beach-restoration project. As a scientist with many years of experience, I have determined that this is the best engineering solution to provide long-term service the community. Rather than destroy any ecosystem, the groins will provide habitat for various types of sea life.
3. I look forward to welcoming all of you, with warm Aloha, to the public beach that will result from this project.
4. There is no advantage for anyone to opposing this project—only significantly negative consequences. Those who want more public beach access should welcome the project.
5. A substantial portion of the Maui County tax base will vanish if the buildings are condemned due to ocean-water intrusion. In that case, Maui residents who live on inland parcels will be expected to "take up the slack" because the growth of County government has been predicated on the continued support from the dynamic economic engine of the West Maui beach resorts.
6. I ask that you please, kokua, – without delay – expedite the formation of a Community Facilities District to enable this project to move forward with the next steps of the process. The CFD will cost less than the taxes that West Maui has paid over the decades.
1. I live in propesed area where it has ready taken almost 2 years to supposedly "fix" the small road bridge at Kahananui! All to put in sidewalks???!!! Low road as been a nightmare! What do you think this project is going to do at the expence of us who live here???!!
2. There are several surf spots in that area used by all locals in the are and ALL those groins gonna kill all the surf spots directly going against our rights!!!
3. THESE DAM THINGS WONT WORK HERE!!!
4. I further concure the the MANY other opposed opinions.
NOTICE!! NO ONE IS COMMENTING FOR THIS REDICULOUS PROJECT!!!
Writing to express my opposition towards this project. Please remember that how we handle this project is how we will handle others of this kind. If approved, I can already see other wealthy corporations along the shores of Kihei asking for similar resolutions. I feel confident in stating that the majority of our local community would not support. Stop all development on shorelines! Plant deep rooted native trees if you want to save the shoreline. Destroying an ecosystem so that malihini can take a walk and post on their Instagram is not priority.

NO to these T-groins, NO to pumping in sand, NO to any man-made / artificial beach replenishment / shoreline mitigation strategies. All we get from any of that is destruction to the ecosystem and worsened erosion over time.

Much of the current degradation to Kahana is from the existing sea walls. Since that prove a disaster, I don't believe opting for a different hardened structure is a sound idea. We see what a rosy picture the sea engineers paint for this project. I sure that when the sea walls were installed, the sea engineers back then told the public how great their project was going to be. There are hundreds of articles on the downdrift erosion caused by groins. They should be mandatory reading for the people making the final decision on this proposed project.
I am in complete opposition to this plan. My family has utilized this area for cultural practices for generations, and this project will completely alter and destroy the ecosystem that exists in the area. Ridiculous.
I am opposed to this project We are learning that beach nourishment is not sustainable. Look at Oahu as a prime example.
I am a full time resident of many years downstream near a proposed sand donor site. How can the County assure me that my community won't experience similar it worse effects to the reef , near shore & marine populations . Maui has many other more pressing issues with a housing shortage for locals that should be a priority now. I urge opposing this project
I oppose the Kahana T Groin project. The project will change the face of Kahana Bay forever, and the cost of maintaining the groins will fall on the county. Also, already the area is unaccesible and rugged and local residents do not have access to the coast areas in this large area of Kahana. The t groins would be extensive amounts of work bringing heavy equipment and workers to the area. The lower road is in constant disrepair and this project would put much too much stress on the infrastructure not only within the bay.
I can not believe we are even looking at such preposterous plans. There are many things Maui county needs to spend money on subsidizing and supporting affordable housing, sidewalks, sewer improvements, schools, homelessness, parks move ambulances a hospital. We do not need to be funding and supporting a project which
1. Will not work - the research shows these do not work well and with sea level continuing to rise are only a temporary fix
2. Do NOT benefit the actual people of Maui county. Many of whom are struggling to find housing while these second and third vacation homes sit empty.
3. I am a marine scientist and environmental damage of sand mining will be detrimental to the health and well being of our reefs as well as the benthic creatures (bottom dwellers). We have enough problems with overuse and now off island residents are proposing full on destruction for their personal enjoyment. NO ! I have attached a link so you can better understand this issue and it’s impacts and allow you to make an educated decision. https://e360.yale.edu/features/the-hidden-environmental-toll-of-mining-the-worlds-sand
The solution is coastal dune restoration and native plant restoration. Couple this with managed retreat. We know better now so we must do better.
This is an insult to the people of Maui county, our tax dollars should not be used for your bad choices. Even in the bible it says Matthew 7:24-26 that you should build your house on rock and not of sand.
This can not and should not be allowed to pass.
