I’m concerned that the budget only provides for 6 months of salary for the Director and Deputy Director for the Voter approved E Maui Water Authority.
Not sure if this is an error in your budget but I strongly support funding this position for a full year.
Whoever gets appointed for these important jobs needs to know that they are fully funded by our County. The taxpayers understand that these positions are vital to the protection of the E. Maui watershed and voted in this Department with strong support. Please do not underfund it. It’s a waste of time and money if it’s not supported properly.
Budget Recommendations for you to consider and support.
Include 6 additional months of Director salary to bring the positionʻs funding to a total of 12 months for the year.
Amend the Administrative Assistant position to serve both the Director as well as the East Maui Regional Board, which is currently in the process of formation.
Include Professional Services for:
An engineering analysis of the system.
A financial plan and business model.
An overview of available grants and other municipal funding options.
I also support the County tot invest in a compost facility since we are currently without one.
I suggest using a portion of the New Kula Ag park for this facility since it has large portions of the property that are poor choices for farming.
The park will also be needing large amounts of compost to amend the terrible soil left dead after decades of monocroping sugar cane.
It’s a great location for a county compost facility.

We now have a chance to help improve the plan (WUDP) and work to incorporate more accurate data about Ha'ikū, west Maui and Nā Wai 'Ehā, as it evolves. We ask the County Council to recommend the following budget allocations to the Mayor in order to operationalize our Water Authority as soon as possible:
