    Hi,

I support replacing 24 outdated injection wells in Ma'alaea with new cleaner wastewater technology

This project which Councilwoman Kelly King proposes to begin funding, can be further funded by the Federal Infrastructure Bill. Maui Pono will provide land above and away from the ocean so that outdated polluting injection wells will be replaced by technology that will provide cost effective water quality exceeding standards.

    Sincerely,

    Gordon Lange

We support the Maalaea Regional Wastewater Plant

This timely project would replace outdated polluting injection wells with technology that would provide water above the clean water standards on land Maui Pono offers above and away from the ocean. A reasonably priced system that could use Infrastructure monies from the Feds. Maui will benefit in many ways.

    Mahalo!

I am writing in support of Councilmember King's budget request for $9.5 million in funding for a Regional Wastewater Treatment plant to replace Ma'alaea's 24 injection wells which harm the ecosystem of Ma'alaea Bay. The proposed treatment and reclamation facility is an environmentally and economically sound endeavour with many value added benefits (firebreaks, irrigation, fertilizer for proposed sustainable farming) resulting from reuse of the treated wastewater and biomass. The Ma'alaea community urges your support of funding for this project, which will protect Ma'alaea Bay and benefit all of Maui.

I am Zoltan Milaskey, Founder of Mana Energy, and I am testifying on BFED-1 in support of Maui
Economic Development Boards Economic Development Grant under the Maui County Office of
Economic Development. We are a local technology company that develops a software platform to
track and manage solar PV systems. Our software is used locally and nationally and as far away as
the Caribbean. I am traveling now, so I am submitting written testimony in support of MEDB. Over the
past couple of years MEDB has reached out and provided support to our company helping us grow
and provide our services in the renewable energy space. During the worst of the COVID pandemic
they provided us guidance on how to get support/funding. Most recently they encouraged us to
pursue federal opportunities through SBIR, a program that funds a diverse portfolio of startups and
small businesses across technology areas and markets to stimulate technological innovation. During
this process we applied into the Department of Energy’s Made in America Solar program, and we’re
awarded a prize for Grid Integration from DOE/National Renewable Energy Laboratory to further our
work in Solar+EV Charging. As a direct result we were able to bring on 3 new hires locally. One
Kamehameha grad, back from college with an interest in software. Another individual who recently
graduated UH and a third individual that we trained and are supporting to grow with our company.
MEDB’s work and support provides local technology companies such as Mana a resource to pursue
initiatives that otherwise may be unattainable.

I am Shia Bush and I am testifying on BFED-1 in support of the Maui Economic Development Boardʻs Economic Development Grant under the Maui County Office of Economic Development. I had the opportunity of being a part of the STEMworks Ag Internship Program on the island of Moloka’i. I was a part of this internship from September until December of 2021, and during this time I was also taking online college courses, which encouraged me to go outside more. Having this opportunity helped me learn about the Hawaiian moon calendar, and make plant cuttings, I learned how to grow and care for native Hawaiian plants, and I got to meet new people. Working on the farm I was able to take many fresh vegetables, fruits, and plants home which influenced me to begin growing a few plants in my own backyard. This internship has also given me an insight into the agriculture field and the homestead lifestyle. The STEMworks Ag Internship Program allows students to have hands-on experience and to learn more about agriculture from a mentor and the style of how they run their operations. I am very thankful for the experience and knowledge that I have gained from the STEMworks Ag Internship Program.

Re: Mayor's Proposed Budget, funding needs and other needed amendments to that document, in particular The Māʻalaea Wastewater Reclamation System. Maui County Councilmember Kelly King proposed last week that the County include the $9.5 million to build the Māʻalaea Wastewater Reclamation System in the Maui County Fiscal Year 2023 Budget. We ask the County to take the bold step of approving the $9.5 million for this facility now, so it can be operational within 3 years. We need to act now for our coral reefs.

Re: Testimony in Strong Support of Funding for the Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art (“HOA”)

    Aloha mai kākou,

My name is So-One Hwang, and I am a resident of Kahului. My daughter and I are members of the Hālau Kekuaokalā`au`ala`iliahi under Na Kumu ‘Iliahi and Haunani Paredes. Mahalo for the opportunity to testify in strong support of funding for the Hālau of ʻŌiwi Arts in the proposed FY 2023 budget.

Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art would honor the immeasurable labor of love that Kumu Hula have given to our community and would make it possible for them to increase their impact. My daughter and I dance Hula because it brings us joy to celebrate and honor where we live, to belong to our Halau ‘ohana, and to move in unison with others. We recognize the importance of making such opportunities more widely available through the Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art.

Over many decades, Hālau Hula and Kumu Hula have contributed to our community. Cultural practitioners like Kumu Hula are experts and leaders of our community. They recognize the importance of environmental stewardship, educate ʻohana from keiki to kūpuna, tell and celebrate the stories of our home, sing of its beauty, and bring both joy and pride to our larger community. The Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art would provide long-overdue support for the culture and practitioners that make our home so special.

Hula – a constitutionally protected traditional and customary practice – is not only integral to Kānaka Maoli, but the culture of Maui County, as well. It is a nexus for so many of our ʻŌiwi arts and practices to thrive. An investment in Hula is ultimately an investment in community. Providing a space dedicated to and designed through the lens of Hula creates a visible and reliable space for education, performance, preservation, and excellence of art and culture in our own home. Further, as a cultural center for our community and the world, the Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art will foster pilina, inspire connection, and uphold cultural excellence. This space is not only an investment for the near future but will have lasting impacts on our community identity for generations to come. Mahalo for your service to our island home. Please vote to support full funding of the Hālau of ʻŌiwi Art.

    Mahalo nui,

    So-One Hwang

Please fund the proposed Maalaea Wastewater Reclamation System to save reefs and stop polluting the ocean. Injection wells are outdated and Membrane Bioreactors are a reasonably priced and fast to install, relatively, solution, plus the Federal Infrastructure Bill can provide the remaining money after Councilwoman Kelly King's proposed $9.5 million is used. The land has been pledged away from shoreline. This is the perfect solution and time to begin to ameliorate the problem of injection wells in Maalaea. Mahalo.
