I apologize, I did not make it to the testimony. I just found out about it, moments ago and am currently on Hawai'i Island working the Merrie Monarch.
I am writing to ask support for an ocean stewardship program for young women. The young high school to early 20s women will learn maritime skills, Hawaiian protocol, and traditional navigational knowledge while being stewards of the ocean. They will be doing water testing throughout the waters of Maui Nui and will organize community shoreline and ocean cleanups. Currently Maui County only has a handful of Women Captains. It is our goal to empower our young women to be stewards of our ocean. Ocean stewardship is much needed for the health of our ocean, earth, and our people of the ocean. Please consider funding the crossing of the Cutty Sark from Washington State to Maui so that Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Voyaging Society can start this program for our young women of Maui, starting this fall.
