Hiring an Affordable Housing Coordinator has been recommended as far back as 2005. The late Gladys Baisa as MEO's Executive Director convened the Maui Nui Housing Task Force, which recommended the hiring of an Affordable Housing Coordinator. In 2021, the Comprehensive Affordable Housing Plan in recommended the establishment of this position. I recommend that the County of Maui follow the example of Hawaii Public Housing Authority, which hired Highridge Costa to plan and develop about 10,000 new affordable housing units for the State of Hawaii.
