Dear Chair, Vice-Chair, and Committee:
My name is Amy Johnson and I am the Chief Development Officer for the Maui Family YMCA. I am submitting this written testimony in support of Bill 8 (2024), Amending the Fiscal Year 2024 Budget: Office of the Mayor (Administration Program).
The appropriation of $200,000 for Maui Family YMCA is part of a larger program that expands on the existing partnership established between Maui Family YMCA and Grow Some Good which transformed 1/4 acre into garden spaces with fruit trees, vegetables and other indigenous edibles.
The funding initiates work on a two acre parcel adjacent to the Y facility to create a sustainable, intergenerational community food forest that offers the benefits of horticultural therapy, educational opportunities, workshops, and social enterprise programs that serve underprivileged and disaster affected communities across Maui. Additionally, the program addresses critical wellness needs of the community, giving underserved and economically disadvantaged populations access to services promoting healthy lifestyle awareness and overall wellness.
Maui Family YMCA has been serving residents since 1960 and we are very appreciative of the support of the County of Maui and other public and private organizations. These funds will allow us to build on existing programs and create a sustainable and valuable asset for the community.
