BFED-76 Bill 17 (2024) BILL 17 (2024) AND BILL 18 (2024), AMENDING THE FISCAL YEAR 2024 BUDGET: CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS, DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION (L?NA'I COMMUNITY PLAN AREA, L?NA'I YOUTH CENTER AND SKATE PARK) (BFED-76)
I am writing in support of Bill 17 (2024), as it pertains to the construction of a skatepark on Lānaʻi. A skate park being built on Lānaʻi is long over due. I have been skating for well over 30 years and it is one of the things that have remained fairly constant from my youth until now. The lessons and character that come from the persistence needed in skateboarding has been a blessing. There is nothing like falling down to learn how to get back up. Skateboarding developed directly from surfing, the great tradition of Hawaiʻi. Like surfing, Skateboarding is now an Olympic sport. To not have the facilities for the cousin of surfing in the birthplace of surfing is unfortunate. Globally, skateboarding is ever growing and very mainstream in most developed nations. It is a shame that we have been without a skatepark on Lānaʻi this long. The need will not go away, and the price tag will only grow. Please do what should have been done yesterday and do whatever is needed to see this project through. Iʻm not quoting this correctly, but... Whenever you enjoy the shade of a tree, remember someone long ago had the foresight to plant the seed and water that tree. The only better time than now to plant the seed, was yesterday.
Aloha,
Skateparks are like baseball fields. There should be one in every community to foster another recreation outlet for our keiki. It's a positive gathering place for the entire community. Look to the example of Hana and what the skatepark there has done for the community to see how impactful a skatepark will be in the rural community of Lana'i. Mahalo.
This is Jacob Janikowski and I am not a paid lobbyist. I support the skatepark because non-traditional sports like skating are an incredible outlet for kids who don’t fit in and the youth of Lāna’i need more support for the local government as they have very few outlets to rely on. Please support the funding for the skatepark as the longer we wait it will only continue to get more expensive. Thank you Maui County Council for your support of this project and I as well as many others hope to see this project come to fruition.

I am in favor of Bill 17 2024 to support funding for a skateboard park on Lanai. It's so important for our county to support the non-traditional sports. Not all of our keiki want to play "ball" sports. Supporting non-traditional youth activities is always a sound investment. Mahalo, Kim Ball
I am testifying to support Bill 17 (2024).
To amend the budget to support the "Lanaʻi Youth Center and Skate Park."
A skatepark on Lanai would be a blessing to many. Please support the health of our community by helping to provide a fun, safe place for people of all ages to enjoy skating.
Aloha,
I am testifying to support Bill 17 (2024).
To amend the budget to support the "Lanaʻi Youth Center and Skate Park”.
The establishment of a skatepark on Lanai is a momentous endeavor, representing a highly desired recreational facility that will undoubtedly serve as a cornerstone of joy and community engagement for the vibrant youth and families of both Lanai and Maui County at large.

A skatepark on Lanai is a long sought after recreation facility that will be a great service and amenity to the youth and families of Lanai and Maui County.
A skatepark located at the new Lanai Youth Center, offers a safe haven for recreation and socialization for youths and families.
Skateparks in Maui County have proven to be a great success and social safety net, offering positive activity and peer support, esp. to youth that might not otherwise be involved in organized sports and after-school activities.
