I fully support Reso 23-36 referring to Lanai, Molokai, and Maui planning commission to a proposed bill related to expanding farm dwellings. Farmers should be allowed to live on the land where they are employed. Further, I would like to address what mechanism would be used to make farm dwellings affordable to the farmers. Farming is hard work, and typically for low wages. We need to support our farmers as there is such a growing demand for locally grown food.
I support 23-36. As a 36 year resident our children have moved away because they cannot afford homes here. Adding 500sf to the current 1000sf Ohana rule would make it easier for a family to live in a larger space. Don’t penalize residents because of those who may abuse this change for vacation rentals.
Aloha,
I strongly support expanding the sq footage for farm drilling to 1500 sf. This is an important step in the right direction and much more can be done to support our farmers who struggle to afford to rent, buy or live close to the place they farm. Living on your farm land make so much sense because it enables the farmers to work early in the day and late in the day, thus protecting themselves from the midday heat. It also reduces that possibility of produce theft and vandalism if someone is living on the farm. For us older farmers, it allows a structure for our farm help to live on the property.
I like where this Reso is headed and support it fully. Even to the point of allowing farmers housing in the Agricultural parks in Maui County.
If we want our farmers to succeed, we need to do more to support them.
Mahalo for the chance to testify on this important issue.
