Why does the council's inaction on this item not surprise me?
I remember when Hannibal Tavares was mayor. A group of us from West Maui traveled to Wailuku to testify on behalf of the aquatic center. Howard Kihune was on the council at that time. He came out before the meeting start and spoke to our group..... Sam Kadotani, Robert Kawaguchi, Susan Yap... I don't remember all of the supporters in favor of building the aquatic center, but we believed it was our last trip and we would finally get final approval.
Before the meeting started, Howard came out and told our group, "don't worry what happens here today. Everything is going to be alright."
WELL, IT WASN'T ALRIGHT.
At the meeting we were utterly shocked to learn that Mayor H. Tavares wasn't going to sign any monies to West Maui to build an aquatic center before Upcountry Maui. The proposal after decades of lobbying efforts was shot down. Sam Kadotani and Robert Kawaguchi had lobbied for years;
and, on the home stretch, the council had drowned their efforts on behest of the mayor.
It eventually happened, the aquatic center, that is. we lobbied Charmaine Tavares, then Parks and Recreation Director and she saw reason with what we said and talked her father into signing the check!
Don't let Napili Bay go down the council's proverbial drain like that. The Napili Bay Improvement District should be protected at all costs. Please investigate what has happened to what I thought was ironclad and what it meant those many years ago when it was first written.
Uphold our dreams and the council's original goal. How did this happen/ Please tell me why.
