Subject: Central Maui Landfill - EKO Compost

On August 30, 2021 the Infrastructure and Transportation Committee, Chaired by Ms. Sugimura, heard testimony regarding the "Central Maui Landfill (IT-60)".

My testimony centered around EKO Compost. EKO Compost will be vacating its spot at the landfill due to the expansion of the landfill itself. They need a new location in which to process Maui's green waste.

I am suggesting and actively advocating that the County of Maui lease a section of the future Kula Agricultural Park (260 plus acre) located off of Omaopio/Pulehu Junction to EKO Compost. The County of Maui and EKO Compost have demonstrated the success of a public/private partnership and I am encouraging the continuance of that successful relationship.

EKO Compost provides an invaluable service to Maui by accepting all green waste and untreated wood products. They also provide a commodity that is used by farmers, small farmers, backyard horticulturists, homeowners and those seeking clean compost. This is literally a "win - win" for all. The continuance of EKO Compost is in the BEST INTEREST of MAUI.

Because EKO Compost needs to vacate the landfill, this becomes a time sensitive issue. Let the Maui County Council advocate and the Victorino Administration actively pursue the relocation of ECO Compost to the site suggested.

My this correspondence be incorporated into the minutes of the Infrastructure and Transportation Committee August 30, 2021.
