I am writing to express my strong support the Hōkūao Affordable Housing by Pūlama Lānaʻi.
As you all are aware the lack of available affordable housing is an issue across Maui County. On the islands of Lana’i and Moloka’i the lack of available affordable housing inventory is even greater.
The Hōkūao Project offers the residents of Lana’i something that they’ve been waiting on for many years, the chance for them to stay on Lana’i and raise their families on their home island without having to pack the entire ‘ohana into one house.
This project will offer 150 rental properties to the residents and families of Lana’i. This is a feat that neither the State nor the County has been able to do for the Lana’i community in the past many years. While I am hopeful that the county project will soon follow with affordable rental homes along with homes for purchase, the Hōkūao Project is good first step. And a first step that the community has been waiting for and supports.
