Pesticides do not belong in our public places where keiki and ohana gather in our beautiful natural environments. My mother’s cancer was caused by environmental toxins from agricultural pesticide use in California in the 50s and 60s. There are long-term negative impacts on our communities, individuals, and the āina. Why poison our own?

I am so grateful for the beautiful green spaces we have available for outdoor recreation and family time. I support transitioning away from using pesticides in our parks so we and our keiki can play safely, without concern for our health. Thank you so much for supporting this bill! It feels like progress, and seems to align with this culture that values land as sacred.

My name is Sonia Avasthi and I am in full support of EACP-1.

I use “The Commons” (parks) on a daily basis. These are our most valuable spaces in society, and should be safe for all to enjoy without risk of harm.

The Parks Department have already been through trainings and Public Works are using alternative solutions to pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. I urge you to vote yes, and believe current and future generations will thank you for your wisdom.

There are so many good examples from other counties around the world who have stopped using pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Ota’s time for Maui to join the movement for healthier and more cost effective ways of working! Mahalo.

Please stop poisoning Maui. It’s the 21st century!! Don’t you realize pesticides/herbicides not only reduce oxygen in the air (adding more CO2) but contaminates drinking water, the ocean, soil, beneficial insects, birds, worms, essential microbes in soil and humans.

I have been weeding a section of Olinda road that public works used to spray with Roundup. I asked them NOT to spray. I’ve been doing this for 5 years!!! And it’s beautiful- green - healthy - sequestering CO2 and it beautifies Olinda Road.

Having a program similar to “Adopt a Highway”, Maui could have a volunteer program to weed guardrails and utility poles by people who care about life.

When I see the county spraying….it is validation that they don’t give a crap about the environment or any species of life. It is sickening. They do this on the mainland ….. we should be better.

Stop filling the pockets of evil corporations that say spraying is safe…..they are lying!! I’m sure you’ve heard of the thousands of lawsuits of people who are sick or have died from Roundup.

Just to add insult to injury- Mahi Pono Farms sprayed PARAQUAT on their fields!!! Paraquat causes Parkinson’s Disease!! Mark my words, dozens of pukalani residents will be diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the coming years from Mahi Pono’s ignorance.

    Stop the madness. Use intelligence.
Ban all harmful pesticides on Maui.
And please evict Bayer/Monsanto from Maui for all their atrocities.

Maui is sacred. Let’s treat it as such.

As a Maui resident, I support restrictions on the use of pesticides on Maui County property and parks. Some years ago, my dad walked his dog regularly at a County park. Unfortunately, he didn't realize that certain chemicals were being used there. It was only a bit later, once his dog had puppies and several died due to birth defects that we did further research and found a potential link between the chemical used and this type of defect. We can truly never know the exact cause, but it was a very sad experience that I feel could have been prevented through smarter pesticide use. I think about this often when I see children and families playing in a park—or when I see people walking their dogs along County roads. We have many alternative methods of pest and weed control that don't pose so many health risks. It would be wonderful for Maui County to support this movement.

I support this bill and want to see our public areas treated with utmost respect. This is a great start. Eliminating synthetic fertilizers and pesticides on county parks and roadsides is a transition that has already been slowly taking place. The Parks Department have already been through trainings and Public Works are using alternative solutions to pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. It is a smooth transition and easy implementation that will ensure a healthier environment for all. There has also been a proven record of other cities across the U.S. implementing similar solutions at no extra cost. This is a move in a positive direction that must take place.

Pass the law making The use of pesticides And synthetic fertilizer On county on parks and roadside. We know that this is dangerous for our health, we know that these products now cause cancer and they should not be used in such a small environment where water contamination and food contamination much better in the air we breathe is a huge problem. There is a better way let’s set an example for the rest of the world
