    Aloha Council Members,
My name is Penny Wakida and I am a Director for the Lahaina Restoration Foundation.
I support the $400,000 designated in the mayor’ budget for the planning and implementation for Moku’ula.
The community strongly supports respecting Moku’ula.
Additionally I ask for continued county funding of $191,000 for the maintenance of parks and open spaces in the Lahaina Historic Districts.
I also support retaining and repairing the tennis and basketball courts located there. The tennis court has up to 40 students practicing daily and yet there are crumbling backboards, cracked asphalt, and non-existent landscaping. The courts are named in honor of a great tennis coach, Shigesh Wakida, and must be preserved and respected. The adjacent basketball court is popular every evening with young people.
Please support the $400,000 for Moku’ula and the continued funding of $191,000 for Lahaina Historic District Groundskeeping.
    Thank you,
    Penny Wakida

    Dear Maui County Counselors,
I am a resident of Haiku and grew up going to school in Upcountry Maui. I am writing to encourage you to put funding toward building a playground at Eddie Tam in 2022. I have plenty of friends and family with toddlers who would greatly benefit from having a playground nearby that is specifically designed for kids in an older age bracket. The only other playgrounds available in the area are at least 15 minutes away and designed for kids 5+. Public playgrounds give kids the ability to socialize, exercise, and build a sense of community from a young age. Please allocate funds to move this project forward! I will look forward to bringing my kids here one day.
Thank you so much for your consideration. I appreciate all your hard work on planning this budget!

    Dear Maui County Council,
I am a long time Maui resident and homeowner. Although I live in Maui Lani, my child attends school in Makawao and like many families, we are upcountry frequently. I am writing to ask you to include funding for a playground at Eddie Tam in the 2022 budget. With rising childhood obesity and the awareness that outdoor play is safer during a pandemic era, more parks and playgrounds are necessary. Currently, there are no public playgrounds in Makawao; all of the playgrounds within 15 minutes of Makawao only permit children over five. Outdoor play increases mental resiliency and cognitive function, and each community of keiki and makua deserves nearby access to a playground. Please allocate funds to move this project forward.
Mahalo for the hard work you do on behalf of everyone on Maui.

    Aloha,
My name is Tatiana Nagura, I am a life long Upcountry resident, Elementary School Teacher and Mom of a 13 month old (with baby #2 coming soon). I am writing to encourage you to include funding for a playground at Eddie Tam in the 2022 budget. Currently there are no public playgrounds in Makawao and all of the playgrounds within 15 min of Makawao have signs stating they are designed for children aged 5+. Our community of parents and keiki would greatly benefit from this enhancement of Eddie Tam. Please allocate funds to move this project forward. Thank you so much for your consideration and hard work on this year’s budget!
    Thanks,
    Tatiana Nagura
