Dear Chair Molina and Members of the Committee:
I write in support of GET-2(47) the nomination of Emmett Rodrigues to the Maui County Police Commission for the term expiring March 31, 2023.
I have known Emmett for years. I have always found him to be thoughtful, actively involved, and committed to our community’s health and safety, as demonstrated through his 34-year professional career with the state Department of Public Safety’s Sherriff Division.
Whether coaching, volunteering in the community, or at work with the Sherriff Division, Emmett genuinely gives his best no matter what task is at hand. His years of law enforcement experience will undoubtedly be of great value to the Council, Mayor, Chief of Police, employees and officers of the Maui Police Department, and most importantly, the public he has always sworn to protect.
This is a courtesy request for your consideration of a gentleman that I have been associated with for over 36 years. More than half my life. He is selfless and committed. He previously served on this Commission, sat out the statutory years, and has since continued to apply to serve.
Aikido Pioneer, and retired from Maui Police Department, Shinichi Suzuki - Prior to his demise in 1998; Applicant Leil Koch, assisted him and escorted him to Poland and other foreign countries. After his passing, Leil continues to serve at the Aikido Dojo in Wailuku, where the Policy Academy trains.
Leil Koch sits on many National Committee’s, representing Hawaii, and is able to bring a global guidance and perspective to our island community. Especially in light of the historic police atrocities, we need a highly skilled communicator. Chief Faamu will be leaving the department soon; and once again, we need competent willing volunteers to affect the process and transition.
I hope and pray that you will consider and review all applicants prior to the hearing; have open discussion with all applicants and each other; to really discern whom is best to meet the needs of our community in this volatile time. Pray also that you will be a unified council to nominate the highest and best; not just “your nominee”. As public servants, please consider our island community accordingly.
Aloha,
